Stripe Pending Balance vs Available Balance
Your Stripe balance has two parts: money that has settled and can be paid out (available), and money that is still being processed (pending). Payouts are sent only from the available balance, which is why a payout rarely equals your total sales.
The short answer: the pending balance is money Stripe is still holding while it settles (typically T+X business days, plus any holds or reserves). The available balance is what can actually be paid out. A payout is drawn from the available balance on your payout schedule — not from everything you have ever sold.
What pending and available mean
According to Stripe’s payouts documentation, Stripe sends funds from your
available balance to your bank account as payouts. Funds start
as pending and become available based on your
settlement timing. Each balance transaction carries a
status of available or pending, and an
available_on date that tells you when it settles.
Settlement timing (T+X) and your payout schedule
Settlement timing is how long it takes for funds to become available, usually written as “T+X” business days. “T” is the transaction time (when the payment was captured). Your payout schedule (daily, weekly, monthly or manual) controls when payouts are sent, but it does not change how long pending funds take to become available. With daily payouts and a T+3 timing, Stripe pays out daily from transactions captured 3 business days earlier. The first payout after your first live payment can take 7–14 days.
A worked timeline
Assume a T+2 settlement timing and daily payouts, ignoring fees for clarity:
| Day | Event | Pending | Becomes available | Paid out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | $1,000 in sales | $1,000 | Wed | — |
| Tue | $800 in sales | $800 | Thu | $1,000 (Mon) |
| Wed | Mon’s $1,000 now available | $800 | — | — |
| Total sales vs total paid out by Tuesday | $1,800 vs $1,000 | |||
By Tuesday you have $1,800 in sales, but only $1,000 has been paid out — the other $800 is still pending and will be paid out later. At any moment, available ≠ total sales.
How to check pending vs available in Stripe
-
Open Balances
In the Dashboard, open Balances to see your pending and available amounts side by side.
-
Find your settlement timing
Settlement timing depends on your country and payment method and is shown in your payout settings. Bank payment methods (ACH, SEPA, etc.) settle later than cards.
-
Read available_on on each row
In the balance transaction export, the
available_ondate is when the funds become available — match payouts to that date, not thecreated(sale) date. -
Watch for negative balances
If refunds or disputes exceed your available balance, your account can go negative, and Stripe may create a negative payout that debits your bank. Your bank must support debit transactions for this.
Common misunderstandings
- “Available equals everything I sold.” No — only settled funds are available; recent sales are still pending.
- Changing the payout schedule speeds settlement. It changes when payouts are sent, not how long settlement takes.
-
Matching payouts to the sale date. Match to
available_on; the created date is earlier. - Assuming the first payout is fast. The first payout typically takes 7–14 days; later ones follow your schedule.
- Forgetting holds and reserves. Risk reviews, minimum balance settings, or reserves can keep funds pending longer than the standard T+X.
How Stripe Money Detective can help. Stripe Money Detective imports the Payout Reconciliation (Itemized) CSV and reconciles each payout against its component balance transactions, grouping them by reporting category and showing the reconciliation status. It supports automatic payouts in a single currency and runs entirely on your Mac — no Stripe connection, no upload. It explains the payout; it is not accounting or tax advice. See how it works.
